I know television goes in trends, but it seems like Sitcoms don't seem like they have nearly the smart or well developed humor that they used to. In the 70's we got hit with shows like All In The Family that tackled bigger issues and had great writing and were funny too. In the 80's it was family sitcoms like Cosby. The 90's was dominated by the king of smart sitcoms, Seinfeld, so well written, and now in the 00's it appears were back to a lower level of humor.

I think we had too many sitcoms at one time, and they all sort of burnt out at the same time. We're in a middle period right now.
To be honest though, I'm having a hard time complaining, with Scrubs, 24, House, and Bones to watch.

Ugly Betty is a fun new sitcom, but I am not sure it has any lasting power. Lots of reality tv instead of smart sitcoms, that seems to be the trend for now.

Yeah, there do seem to be waves. There are some smart TV shows, they just aren't sitcoms. Grey's Anatomy, which actually is pretty funny. I think Heroes is good. And Jericho. Hey, maybe this is the era of sci-fi?

I'll agree that there are some very smart new shows on tv. Scrubs, CSI, House, 24, etc., I think the early to mid 2000's may go down as one of the best times ever for television (drama anyway), but I was just thinking that today's sitcoms don't measure up. I will also agree that the nation probably got burnt out on all the sitcoms of the late 90's.
